Employee Snapshot: Emily Gray

At Peace Hills Insurance, we’re proud to celebrate the incredible people who make our company what it is. Insurance Careers Month reminds us to celebrate rising stars, who are inspiring the next generation of job seekers toward the career path of insurance. Today we are turning the spotlight on Emily Gray, Bodily Injury and Accident Benefits Claims Manager, whose leadership and passion for the future of our industry recently earned her the Emerging Leader Award from the Insurance Institute of Canada. We spoke with Emily about her journey, what drives her, and her vision for the future of insurance.

“… Staying ahead of these trends and continuously learning is what makes this industry so exciting and rewarding.”

For Emily, one of the most exciting aspects of working in insurance is how much the industry is evolving. “It’s a dynamic environment, which is one of the key reasons I’m so motivated and passionate about my career,” she shares. “We’re constantly adapting – whether it is new legislation, shifting market trends, or changing consumer needs. Staying ahead of these trends and continuously learning is what makes this industry so exciting and rewarding.”

Emily’s first steps in the industry began at 18 as a contract underwriting assistant. Recognizing her enthusiasm for the industry, she enrolled in the Insurance and Risk Management diploma program at MacEwan University while also gaining hands-on experience as a claims adjuster for several insurance companies. Over the coming years she would expand her expertise in claims before finally working her way up to her role at Peace Hills back in 2023. She now aims to give advice to new graduates who may or may not be considering a career in insurance. “The world of insurance is vast, and there are many different roles – ranging from underwriting and claims, to risk management and sales. Take the time to explore the different areas within the industry. You may find a niche that really resonates with your skills and interests.”

With advice like this, it is no surprise that in November of last year, Emily was awarded with the Emerging Leader Award. Receiving this award was a special moment for Emily, validating her years of hard work and advocating for insurance careers. “I’m incredibly honoured and humbled,” she says. “I’ve dedicated my career path to the growth and success of this industry, but what truly drives me is supporting the next generation of insurance professionals. This award reinforces my commitment to not only advancing my own career but also helping others along the way.”

Recognizing the unique and changing landscape of insurance is something that Emily considers when it comes to leading her team. “Leadership in insurance requires a long-term, strategic vision while also emphasizing transparency, communication, and empathy – qualities that are essential for building and maintaining strong relationships with clients and employees alike.”

“My leadership approach is rooted in empathy, recognizing that each person has unique strengths and challenges, and guiding them towards their fullest potential.”

As someone who is so passionate about mentorship and workplace culture, it makes perfect sense that Emily has become an integral part of the corporate culture here at Peace Hills. From dressing herself, her husband, and her dog up for a photo op for ‘Insurance Nerds Day’, to rallying her department together for a shot at the title of “Best Decorated Department” during our office’s Halloween festivities, fostering a positive workplace culture is paramount to her. Sharing the ethos Peace Hills Insurance holds as a ‘company that truly cares’, she ensures that her department feels the same way. “My leadership approach is rooted in empathy, recognizing that each person has unique strengths and challenges, and guiding them towards their fullest potential,” adding that she believes celebrating wins, no matter the size, helps fosters a sense of belonging within the team.

It's Emily’s forward-thinking approach to leadership and commitment to mentorship that makes her a valued member of the team at Peace Hills Insurance. As we celebrate Insurance Careers Month, Emily’s story is a reminder that a career in insurance isn’t just about policies and claims – it’s about people and making a meaningful impact.
