Indigenous Relations Consultant (temporary contract role)

Reporting to the Vice President, HR and Administration, this part-time, one year contract position will be responsible for developing and implementing an Indigenous Relations strategy and plan that is aligned with the company’s strategic plan and corporate objectives. This role is responsible to: 

  •  Help establish networks and relationships with other Indigenous communities across Alberta to broaden our reach and appeal to Indigenous job seekers who are looking for a stable and challenging career in insurance;
  • Engage with leaders at Indigenous communities within Alberta, with an emphasis at the community of our sole shareholder, Samson Cree Nation, to strengthen communication, brand awareness and company recognition through targeted and visible event sponsorship and attendance/involvement at community events;
  • Build trust and credibility between the shareholder and the company to enhance the reputation of the company amongst community members at Samson Cree Nation and the broader Indigenous community;

This role will assist in advocating for the implementation of programs, processes and communications that result in shared positive and sustainable effects for both Peace Hills Insurance and the company’s sole shareholder, the Samson Cree Nation. 

A strong commitment to the goal of growing and enhancing awareness of Peace Hills Insurance and its brand within Indigenous communities is essential for success in this role. The role will be primarily remote with some in-person attendance, and reporting to, our head office in Edmonton, AB.

What You’ll Do:

  • Maintain mutually beneficial relations with the Samson Cree Nation and local Indigenous Nations more generally;
  • Coordinate communications initiatives between the company and Samson Cree Nation and other Indigenous Nations;
  • Help support the success of an Indigenous recruitment strategy
  • Promote collaborative partnerships with Indigenous Nations to promote career opportunities in the insurance industry;
  • Communicate to Indigenous community members about the employment opportunities at Peace Hills Insurance;
  • Coordinate information sessions and/or attend career fairs in Indigenous communities promoting current job opportunities at Peace Hills Insurance;
  • Identify opportunities to recruit Indigenous individuals and support Human Resources in recruitment activities at post-secondary institutions and other employment agencies;
  • Promote Indigenous cultural awareness within Peace Hills Insurance through coordination of semi-annual learning sessions for employees;
  • Collaborate with the executive team to ensure that Indigenous Traditional Knowledge is considered with respect to corporate events and celebrations;
  • Coordinate attendance, participation and sponsorship recognition at the Samson Celebrations Powwow, and awards nights or other events at First Nations that promote brand awareness of Peace Hills Insurance;
  • Support the preparation of reporting materials and presentations to the Board of Directors on progress towards goals;

 

What You’ll Bring:

  • Lived experience and strong knowledge of Indigenous Peoples’ unique histories, cultures, protocols, values, beliefs and governments;
  • Post secondary education in business, marketing, administration, or equivalent;
  • Must possess a high level of integrity and personal accountability;
  • Must demonstrate good judgement, ability to deal with complex and sensitive issues;
  • Proven ability to build authentic, respectful relationships;
  • Team player with highly developed communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Experience building relationships and working with Indigenous businesses, community members, governments, and organizations;
  • Ability to provide guidance and support to the business on Indigenous cultural context and protocols;
  • Holds a Certificate in Indigenous Canada or willingness to complete this;
  • Ability to travel and willingness to engage in person with Indigenous communities and key stakeholders;
  • Familiarity with the home, auto and business insurance industry and the job opportunities within would be an asset;
  • Intermediate level computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Word, and PowerPoint is required;
  • A valid driver’s license is required along with a satisfactory criminal and credit record.
