Senior Financial Accountant
We currently have a full-time position available for a Senior Financial Accountant in our Head Office located in Edmonton. Reporting to the Controller, this position is responsible for a wide variety of financial reporting and analysis. The ideal candidate will have strong technical accounting skills and experience and can take on tasks with initiative and independence.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Accounting and Analysis
- Perform month-end process including timely and accurate completion of duties by specified deadlines. This includes the preparation of journal entries, completion of account reconciliations and completion of supporting working papers used in monthly reporting.
- Own the investment accounting process including month end processes, board deliverables, regulatory reporting, investment policy monitoring, results analysis and other tasks, as required.
- Maintain daily tracking of cash balances and provide recommendations for transfers to/from investment managers.
- Provide value-added analysis in the assigned area of responsibility to assist managers and staff in operational decisions.
- Provide support to other team members by preparing supporting working papers used as part of their responsibilities.
- Conduct special projects to provide advice and recommendations required by management.
- Reporting
- Perform research, analysis and implementation of new accounting standards or regulatory requirements, as assigned
- Work as part of a larger team to provide monthly financial statements and related analyses and reports for management within rigorous reporting timelines.
- Prepare the yearly external financial statements, including note disclosures and work closely with the external auditors to finalize all year end reporting.
- Accurately complete statutory filing well-ahead of reporting timeframes.
- Assist in other reporting to authorized third-parties such as external auditors, regulators, industry organizations, tax authorities, reinsurers and credit agencies.
- Assist in the coordination of monthly reinsurance reporting and the annual reinsurance renewal and data for the external independent actuary.
- Prepare presentations, reporting packages and memos for the board and external parties.
- Assist in the preparation of quarterly forecasts and yearly budgets and valuations.
- Maintain process documentation for all duties.
- Provide guidance, training and support to other staff
- Perform other duties as required including backing up other personnel in the department.
Required Qualifications
- A professional accounting designation (CPA) is required.
- Minimum of six (6) years of progressively responsible accounting experience working with budgeting, forecasting, financial operations, reporting and analysis, and auditing.
- Previous experience in insurance, investments or other financial services is considered an asset.
- Strong working knowledge of IFRS, including the ability to analyze and interpret accounting standards.
- Strong Excel skills with the ability to build and work with complex working papers.
- Strong problem-solving skills, accounting principles knowledge, documentation skills, research and resolution skills, data analysis and multi-tasking skills.
- Ability to meet multiple deadlines with strong time management and organizational skills
- Strong self-initiator with an ‘ownership’ attitude.
- Positive attitude and excellent ability to work independently and within a team in a dynamic environment, handling multiple tasks concurrently.
- Ability to process vast amounts of data efficiently and provide meaningful interpretations of data outputs.
- Ability to understand and analyze financial information; determine and mitigate risk.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to draft reports and memos that will be presented to the management team and/or external parties.
